Sexist Mayoral Candidate Wrests Victory in Winter Park
A Winter Park mayoral candidate labeled by some as "sexist" has defeated Winter Park's Sarah Sprinkel. We agree with many of our readers: the competition didn't play fair. In fact, a recent poll confirmed that, if younger residents of Winter Park registered to vote at a higher percentage, Sprinkel might now be planning to take her oath of office.
Though our full faith rests with the good voters of Winter Park, we also know campaigns can be misguided and manipulative. Anderson's latest episode with the Chamber during the second debate should have landed the pollitician a demerit from Winter Park residents and Florida's press. Instead, the vastly subsidized Orlando Sentinel supported Anderson, despite opposing "sexist" and "racist" remarks from other politicians, including moderates and conservatives alike. The double standard is obvious, and perhaps future political ambitions may be one reason the Sentinel and others defend left-wing candidates more robustly from such embarrassing events.
Should Anderson become a political force for higher office, a sexist record might be his kryptonite.
Truth be told, we're not worried about Anderson moving up the public escelator. He's not the right demographic for the Democratic Party of today. However, his ability to easily manipulate residents and pump out-of-town cash into the race does not diminish his position as master puppeteer over the city's political organs. His hijacking of the town commission seems almost as startling and unreal as his political positions: once a former Republican, Anderson can't seem to make up his mind about which side he's on.
Sadly, the voters can't either— and the close vote, separated by only a small several hundred vote margin, did not hold enough fuel to push Sprinkel over the finish line. We endorsed Sprinkel in 2021. Let's hope better judgement prevails in the next election.
