Legislators File Briefs Supporting New District Maps
Attorneys representing both the State House and Senate argued against courts' invalidation of legislative maps, including those currently in the works.
“Mindful of the circumstances that led to the invalidation of senatorial and congressional districts during the last redistricting cycle, the Senate adopted procedures and standards early in its process to guard against a similar result,” reads a brief filed by law firm Shutts & Bowen on behalf of the Senate.
Senate President Wilton Simpson praised the process in the Senate: “Thank you to this body for the professionalism we brought to the process this year with redistricting,” he said. “We can and should be very proud of the work we’ve done here today and we’ll see if the courts are equally as proud.”
The redistricting bill (SB 100) passed out of the Senate on a 37-0 vote. The Florida Supreme Court will review the maps before they become official.
