Newly Elected Judge Celebrates Investiture, Birthday On Same Day
Judge Mikaela Nix celebrated both her investiture as a judge and her birthday on Friday at the Orange County Courthouse. Along with Judge Christy Collins, Judge Nix received her investiture which featured public officials such as former Supreme Court justices, her fellow colleagues on the bench and bar members.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Mayor Jerry Demings, members of Senator Rick Scott’s staff, State Representative Geraldine Thompson, and several notable lawyers and commissioners.
Also speaking to the packed room: clergy members from the judges' churches and their mentors.
Nix’s road to elected office began several years ago with a run against candidate for state house district 47 Stockton Reeves in an ultimate bid to unseat Dem Anna Eskamani.
Though Nix lost the primary, the outcome turned into a boon, with her legal career opening the door to a potential run for judge, coming into fruition this past year.
Nix thanked her law staff, campaign supporters, law explorers, friends, family, husband, campaign consultant John Dowless as well as her mentors.
When speaking to what she hoped for the most, Nix said:
"What [I hope people] see is what they'll be. When they see me my hope is they will see one of the first African American women elected in [this type of] race, that their dreams are achievable in the great United States of America. Dream big and work hard and never ever give up."
Nix currently serves the Ninth Judicial Circuit, residing in Orlando with her husband and two children.
