Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Florida's Dissolution of Disney's Reedy Creek District
A federal judge has rejected the first lawsuit to Florida's law dissolving Disney's Reedy Creek special district.
"Plaintiffs’ theory of standing is that the elimination of the Reedy Creek Improvement District might result in financial harm to Plaintiffs by virtue of a tax increase that has not yet been enacted," U.S. District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga wrote in dismissing the case. "That indirect and highly speculative alleged injury cannot support federal jurisdiction."
Republicans across the state rejoiced at the judge's decision, with the case's rejection being seen as a victory for Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis maintained a highly vocal critique aimed at Disney over the past month from issues relating to the company's criticism of House Bill 1557 (now law), eroniously nicknamed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill by Democrats and some members of the media.
The governor also pointed to the theme park behemoth's close ties to the Chinese Communist Party as a reason for dissolving the district. Municipal leaders such as Jerry Demings have suggested eliminating the district will add to the county's tax burden while Republicans feel the law eliminates cronyism and corporate welfare.
DeSantis' Disney court victory comes at the same the governor's recent congressional redistricting faces a new lawsuit in court.
