FDEO Report: Highest Unemployment in Orange County, Democratic Strongholds
Orange County boasts of the second highest unemployment rate in Florida next Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity's recent report in February.
Also a trend among the counties with high unemployment: restrictions and heavily Democratic leadership. The report reveals the impact of restrictions and lockdowns on the economies of counties run with a strong grip.
Though Governor DeSantis removed counties' abilities to fine and penalize businesses, the effect of past restrictions remain ever present, especially in service industry and tourism sectors.
The Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford areas witnessed the most superfluous job losses in the entire state over-the-year, with 168,000 jobs lost.
Orange County's unemployment rate hovers around 7% according to the FDEO report released in Frebruary.
Despite the abysmal economic situation in the Democrat-run county, Gov. Ron DeSantis boosted residents with an optimistic letter earlier this month, pointing to Florida's steady recovery and relatively stable position comared to other states. "Our economic comeback is strong, and our unemployment rate reflects our prudent approach," De Santis said.
The state continues to open as Florida expands vaccine elegibility to all residents 18+ come April 5. DeSantis also suggested the CDC lift a ban on international cruises amid the expanding inoculation.
