DeSantis Seeks to Curtail Transitional Treatments for Minors with Gender Dysphoria

The office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this week encouraged the state’s board of doctors to follow guidance from the DeSantis administration eliminating various hormonal and surgical operations for minors with gender dysphoria. Critics labeled the move as discriminatory while proponents of the governor praised the move as a victory against child abuse.

State Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo told the Florida Board of Medicine in a letter obtained by NBC News that his office found the science supporting these therapies “extraordinarily weak.”

“Available medical literature provides insufficient evidence that sex reassignment through medical interventions is a safe and effective treatment for gender dysphoria,” the Agency for Health Care Administration wrote.

The agency referred to these procedures as “experimental and investigational with the potential for harmful long term affects.”

Other states, such as Texas and Tennessee, have also acted to curb similar practices, where both governments recently placed limits on transitional procedures for minors.
