CD 7 Contender Cory Mills Calls for Action as Migrant Caravan Surges
A migrant caravan that could become the largest ever to reach the U.S. southern border will soon reach the southern border of the United States. The caravan's arrival comes at a crucial time when the Biden Administration hopes to revoke the Trump era "Title 42" policy allowing the United States to expel illegal immigrants for public health reasons.
Local congressional contender Cory Mills, a cadidate for district 7, recently visited the border wall to witness the crisis himself, expressing his concern on youtube: "I'm going to be different than many of the politicians that are running for office today and many that are in office... I'm here taking it in myself, to get eyes on the real problems, from the human trafficking, from the opioid overdoses, [to title 42]..." said Mills in video he posted on social media.
In a second video Mills posted, the Republican walks beside the Rio Grande River, pointing to flotation devices, clothing, clear plastic bags, and even a life preserver that is left behind by illegal immigrants that have crossed over.
With the current number of migrants close to 10,000, the grand total is expected to swell to about 15,000 before it reaches the border.
The caravan departed Tapachula on the Mexico-Guatemala border on Monday. The migrants, which mostly come from Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, will travel what is known as the coastal route to reach the U.S. border.
Although Mills opposes illegal immigration, he has also called for a moratorium on legal immigration.
""It’s time for America to hit the pause button, and put an immigration moratorium in place to promote a strong republic with America First policies... Over the centuries, Congress has enacted various immigration moratoria. As recently as 1994, Representative Bob Stump (R-Ariz.) introduced the Immigration Moratorium Act of 1994. That bill never left committee, unfortunately. It’s time to try again."
Mills is the first and only candidate in the race for CD 7 to visit the southern border.
