Senate Acquits Trump in Trial FL Legislator Deems "Unconstitutional"
Moments ago the U.S. Senate acquitted former President Donald J. Trump in his second impeachment trial. Labaled as unconstitutional by some, the trial ended in a 57-43 vote in favor of convicting Trump, failing to reach the two-thirds majority required. Seven Republicans joined in opposition to most of their party's Senate delegation.
Trump issued a statement thanking his supporters in Congress: “Our cherished Constitutional Republic was founded on the impartial rule of law, the indispensable safeguard for our liberties, our rights and our freedoms,” Trump said. “It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree.”
State Representative Anthony Sabatini, an ardent supporter of President Trump, told the Local News that the vote constituted the conclusion of "an unconstitutional show trial that should've never occured." Sabatini recenty sponsored a bill to rename a state highway after the former Commander-in-Chief in the state legislature's 2021 session. The divide in the state GOP will likely continue to materialize over the next two years as pro and anti-Trump factions battle eachother for the control of the party.
